What To Do In Uncertain Times

What to do in uncertain times.

A few things entered my mind amidst the whole Covid-19, Coronavirus situation we find ourselves in. The question of what to do in uncertain times crept into my heart.

So, what do we do in this time and in other times of uncertainty?

I can say that I had a day with the news where I just pondered that question. But, to be honest it wasn’t until I did a small inner freak out first. This emergency situation, as well as other hard times, need to point us to the right questions in order to arrive at the right answers.

Firstly, asking the wrong question is a breeding ground for major disappointment and despair. And what we all need, at any given moment of uncertainty is Hope!

Hope… that no matter what happens someone is holding it all together.

I certainly don’t have all the answers and I don’t know anyone who knows what will come of all this. But I do know Jesus, I do know what HE says and that he provides hope, and certainty amid everything that is happening.

What To Do In Uncertain Times: Jesus is Our Hope

Faith is a hard thing because you are literally trusting in the unseen. You are literally trusting that the one who knows everything will never leave or forsake you. The thing that we most need in any time of chaos, confusion, wide-spread panic has not changed.

We are still in need of Grace whether it was this Virus or some other tragic news development.

We have never been in control and will never be.

It is the reason that faith in Christ is so important. But honestly, if you don’t believe in what He says if you can trust what he has said you can’t trust him. Therefore, the hope that only he provides in [the midst of this stormy] life can give you peace.

Nothing outside of Christ can actually give you peace.

We hope in times like this that people will not die or become ill. We hope that these things don’t happen, but we hope in Him.

What to do in Uncertain Times: How To Have Hope

If our hope is in the circumstance, we actually don’t have a real and abiding hope. Our “hope” in that instance will shift right along with the shifting circumstances. Hope in Him is totally different than hoping in circumstances. Circumstances will change but He does not change.

He, Himself is the hope that we have and can have during the difficult, tumultuous times that we face in this life.

Because as things change all around us, He does not change. Jesus is Immanuel (God with us)

God WITH us.

Please let that sink in…

My faith is in all that He says and when I have doubts, they are not of Him. I believe what he has spoken and promised. He will never leave or forsake us. We also know that this is not our final home. This world is corrupt because of our own sinful choices.

This world shakes under the corruption, it groans under the weight of our choices apart from God. The need for salvation isn’t going anywhere. The need for hope and future uncorrupted remains.

My Prayer

My prayer during this difficult season is obviously that God would sustain the life of everyone. Hoping that no one will perish, that no one will be sick unto the point of death.

But more than that that people would see their need for Christ Jesus.

What is going on is hard to watch and I limit how much of the news I take in. Well, that’s an ordinary practice for our household to be honest. I don’t do this because I want to shut myself off from reality. I most certainly don’t want to turn a blind eye to what is happening to people or to their needs.

I am certain this is just another cause and catalyst to pray as most tragic situations are. But I’m not going to rehash the same news over and over and meditate on tragedy.

We pray because we have faith and hope in Jesus. This is an opportunity to submit our hurts, questions, fears and needs to the one that holds this all together.

He can hold you together even when things feel like they are falling apart.

Meditating on Scripture

One of the most needed things right now and any time really is meditating on Scripture. Our imaginations can run wild with all the bad news we are bombarded with daily.

God is in control!

And though God can do anything, He is not obligated to (what my Pastor always says) this is so true.

We don’t know the immediate plans that God has but we do hold to the fact that “he will work all things together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose” Romans 8:28

We meditate on what God says and not our imaginations or the doom and gloom of others.

There is no hope in that!

To meditate on the word of God is as simple as allowing your mind to dwell (focus) on scripture. Finding scriptures to speak to the very thing that you may need encouragement on is so necessary.

Here are a few scriptures to focus on:

Verses of Scripture to Encourage you in who the Lord is. Encouragement in uncertain times

** Scriptures can be referenced here

I hope this helps and encourages you that though what is happening may not be good, God still is Good. Please don’t be a victim of hopelessness and despair. God will help you and sustain you during this time. He is near to the broken-hearted and will draw close to those that will draw close to him.

What Are The Right Questions

What is God trying to show us during this time? What is God calling me to do during this time? In what areas do I need to turn to God? How can I honor God during this time? Who can I pray for amid this chaotic and uncertain time? How can I shine the light of Christ now? Who can I encourage?

What am I tempted to do now instead of drawing close to God? Is it doubt, despair, depression, etc?

The temptation to fear, doubt and despair is strong for many people right now. But I know focusing on yourself will not help anyone.

What to Do in Uncertain Times: Using Time Wisely

Another question to ask yourself of what to do in uncertain times is what you could be doing in and with this time. You maybe like so many that are working from home. Or like some that are uncertain if they even have a job to go back to! The truth is this can be a time to get closer to the Lord.

You can reach out to people that you may not have had the luxury of time to speak to consistently before.

Pick up the phone and call someone. We can distance physically but we don’t have to stop communicating with people.

I work from home and my Husband either works far from home or out of town. I love that we are able to have some lazy days together. He is able to spend more quality time with our little and my son has been his Dad’s shadow. Lol, it’s too cute!

I’ve been able to sleep past 5:15 a.m which has been cool and I’m not the only one getting out of bed in the middle of the night for the time being.

Reminders

This is a reminder that we are not in control and we don’t know what will happen from day today. This is encouraging especially when we find ourselves in the throes of a virus that we have not experienced before.

However, we can lean into God and what HE is saying during this time. I want this time to remind me and you that we serve a God who knows everything, sustains everything and also has a purpose for everything under the Sun.

I invite you to trust the Lord and seek him during this time. He draws near to those that draw near to Him.

The most important reminder is this is Not our Home, this is not our final resting place.
